Valtellina, wine and relaxation

Lombardy · Valtellina and Bormio · 3 daysVerified itinerary ✓

Breathtaking alpine landscapes, historic villages, and world-famous roads await you in one of the wildest corners of Lombardy — a place where the absence of highways and the hassle of mountain driving have preserved a perfect combination of respectful, sustainable tourism. From biodynamic wineries and pizzocchero masterclasses to thermal baths and a submerged bell tower rising from a glacial lake, this is the best of Alta Valtellina and beyond.

Your adventure begins among the gastronomic excellences and historic villages of Valtellina, up to the doorstep of Alta Valtellina.

Latteria di Chiuro

Start the day with a delicious stop at Latteria di Chiuro to stock up on local dairy products.

Pizzocchero Academy, Teglio

Head to Teglio, the heart of pizzocchero. Here, the Pizzocchero Academy awaits you for a masterclass (be sure to get info and book ahead) to learn how to prepare this delightful specialty. After the cooking lesson, visit the charming village of Teglio; Palazzo Besta, in particular, deserves an in-depth visit for its Renaissance frescoes.

Marcel Zanolari Winery

A Swiss guy who moved to Valtellina realized his dream of making biodynamic wine in amphorae here — a truly unique oenological experience.

★
Santuario della Madonna di Tirano

A visit to the magnificent Madonna di Tirano Sanctuary — an unforgettable Baroque masterpiece — is absolutely worth it.

Tirano Historic Center

Tirano's historic center is worth a quick stroll beyond the sanctuary. Visit the Etnographic Museum of Tirano, the characteristic fountain with a monolithic basin, Via Maurizio Quadrio, the former San Giacomo Church, Porta Poschiavina, Palazzo Pretorio, the Town Hall, and Palazzo Merizzi.

Tips for Day 1

☕ Lunch: Ristorante Belandin — a traditional nearby restaurant perfect for a classic pizzoccheri lunch after the cooking masterclass.
🍽️ Dinner: Ristorante Merizzi in Tirano — recommended if it's already dinner time; otherwise continue to Bormio and dine at Agriturismo Rini to savor authentic local cuisine immediately.

The second day is dedicated to thermal relaxation and exploring Bormio, a lively alpine town.

★
Bagni Vecchi Thermal Baths

From Agriturismo Rini, after breakfast with a view of the barn, take a day of relaxation at the splendid Bagni Vecchi thermal baths — in Stefano's opinion, among the most charming in the world — including lunch. If you're in the mood for a change, continue in the evening to the Bagni Nuovi, where you can have an aperitif and enjoy the moon and stars immersed in a warm pool.

Bormio Historic Center

Take a stroll through the central streets of Bormio, this cheerful town shaped by winter sports. Park your car near the Tourism Office, then head to Via Roma up to Piazza del Kuerc and Vicolo del Ginnasio. On the way back there will be many shops where you can stock up on local products.

Braulio Historic Cellar

A visit to Bormio isn't complete without visiting the historical cellar and tasting a fine Braulio Riserva — this ancient bitter was originally created as a medicinal product right here in Bormio.

Panificio Eredi Romani

Another gourmet attraction of Bormio: they bake blueberry tarts all day long. There will be a long line, but it's worth it.

Tips for Day 2

☕ Lunch: Bagni Vecchi — lunch is included as part of a full day of thermal relaxation at one of the most charming thermal baths in the world.
🍽️ Dinner: Agriturismo Rini — return to the agriturismo and enjoy a typical Valtellina dinner.

A day full of adventure awaits you, driving along one of the most beautiful roads in the world and discovering a special highlight in Trentino.

Stelvio Pass

You'll embark on an adventurous route on one of the world's most beautiful roads: the Stelvio Pass (accessible from spring to autumn). Enjoy the memorable route, loved by drivers and cyclists worldwide, and stop for panoramic photos in safety. Drive with caution — it is a unique but demanding experience.

★
Lake Resia

Once you reach Prato allo Stelvio you'll have changed region — it's actually in Trentino, a small piece of land very close to Switzerland. Continue north for a treat: Lake Resia. This is an artificial reservoir that submerged the original town, except for its bell tower, which still rises from the lake's waters. It's so mystical you could spend hours gazing at it — and perhaps start believing in local legends. In Resia you can relax for hours if you have a bike with you, or you can rent one easily.

Tips for Day 3

☕ Lunch: Stelvio Pass trattorias — have lunch at the pass in one of the traditional trattorias, savoring the alpine atmosphere.
🛏️

Lacumontes Lake View Apartments, Resia

Apartments you won't want to leave: Lacumontes Lake View Apartments offer a night in a charming place with a direct view over Lake Resia. This itinerary was designed to connect with itineraries in Trentino and southern Valtellina.
