Val Gerola, untamed Valtellina

Prepare yourself for a total immersion into the heart of Valtellina, a land of grand mountains, ancient flavors, and deeply rooted traditions. This route will lead you to the valley’s most authentic soul—through lively villages, historic workshops, and Val Gerola, guardian of a priceless gastronomic treasure.

I come here at least a couple of times a year, not only to check on my Bitto Storico Ribelle cheese wheels, but also to actively contribute to the preservation of this treasure.

Val Gerola reflects the wildest side of Valtellina—a still little-explored valley where you can ski and, above all, lose yourself in pastures and green meadows. A true paradise.

See you in Val Gerola!

Your adventure begins in Morbegno—a lively town rich in history with a gastronomic offer that will enchant you from the very first morning.

📍 Morbegno: Breakfast, Historical Shopping & Strolls

Start your day by parking for free in Morbegno. Your first stop is a real treat: head to the morning market (at the Sant’Antonio car park, if active) and, above all, enjoy what may be the best croissants of your life at “la Bottega”. This café, always run exclusively by women, is a true stronghold of local baking and a symbol of quality.
After refueling with energy, begin your walk through Morbegno: admire the majestic Church of Saints Peter and Paul, cross the lively Piazza Marconi and don’t miss the historic Bottega Fratelli Ciapponi. This is a must-stop: ask to go down into the cellars and allow yourself to feel the awe and wonder in front of a place untouched by time.
As you explore the shop, you'll find more staircases leading to even more fascinating underground levels. It’s a truly timeless experience that will make you fall in love! Then, stock up on all the local products you need.
Continue your visit with Palazzo Malacrida and enjoy the picturesque historic bridges, starting from Ponte Ganda (formerly Diego Vanoni) to admire the Bitto stream. End your exploration of the town by reaching the Church of San Giovanni Battista and treating yourself to a relaxing aperitif at the Wine Bar La Tavernetta.

🛏️ Where to stay and dine?

For dinner and overnight stay, I’ve chosen one of my favorite places — Agriturismo Ortesida. Here, you can enjoy a traditional Valtellinese dinner, from the legendary pizzoccheri to the delicious taroz, and sleep in comfortable rooms surrounded by the peaceful countryside of Valtellina.
